What will I learn?
This course is suitable for those who already understand general import procedures and want to understand the additional requirements that apply specifically to food and drink. Importing food into Great Britain is governed by a risk-based system that determines which checks and certificates apply, and it is currently going through significant change ahead of a new UK-EU agreement. This course explains how the system works today and what a UK importer is legally responsible for.
Specifically, we cover:
- The Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) and how imported food is categorised by risk
- Import documentation: health certificates, phytosanitary certificates, and commercial documents
- Pre-notification through IPAFFS and the Common Health Entry Document (CHED)
- What happens at the border: checks, fees, and the Common User Charge
- Product-specific requirements, to include:
- Products of animal origin
- Composite and compound products
- High-risk food not of animal origin
- Plants, plant products, and fish
- Comparing requirements from the EU, the rest of the world, and the Republic of Ireland
- Personal import rules for travellers bringing food into the UK
- Customs and tariff considerations specific to food imports
- The upcoming UK-EU SPS Agreement and how it will change the process
